Arter'in açılış sergisi Starter, Vehbi Koç Vakfı Çağdaş Sanat Koleksiyonu'ndan 87 çağdaş sanatçının 160'ı aşkın eserini bir araya getirdi. Serginin küratörlüğünü, Koleksiyon'un oluşturulmasında da çok önemli bir küratöryel rolü olan René Block üstlendi.<br/><br/>Açılış sergisi Starter, konsepti üç yıl önce, 2007 yılında geliştirilen Vehbi Koç Vakfı Çağdaş Sanat Koleksiyonu'na ilk kez göz atma fırsatı sundu. Koleksiyon yapma fikrine geçmişi güvence altına almak yerine, geleceğe hizmet eden bir süreç olarak yaklaşarak geliştirilen Vehbi Koç Vakfı (VKV) Koleksiyonu'ndaki işler, sadece müzayedelerden, sanat fuarlarından veya galerilerden değil, doğrudan sanatçı atölyelerinden de alınıyor. VKV, koleksiyonun oluşturulmasını sanat yapıtının müzeye girişinden, kurumsallaşmasından ve akademik olarak tanımlanmasından önce gelen bir süreç olarak görüyor. Dolayısıyla, Koleksiyon, bir anlamda Block'un "akışkan müze" kavramını takip ediyor: sahip olduğu biçimleri devamlı değiştiren, bazılarını kaybedip bazılarını kazanan, ancak asla bir nihayete ermeyen türden bir müze.<br/><br/>VKV Çağdaş Sanat Koleksiyonu Türkiye'deki ve çevreleyen coğrafyadaki çağdaş sanat üretimine odaklanıyor. 2010 yılı itibariyle koleksiyonda 100 sanatçının yaklaşık 400 işi yer alıyordu. Starter sergisi ise çağdaş sanat alanında Türkiye'de ve uluslararası ortamda gerçekleştirilen güncel üretimlerle, 1960'lardan günümüze sanat tarihsel bir bakış sunuyordu.<br/><br/>Tasarımcı Esen Karol serginin başlığı olan "Starter" kelimesini düz anlamıyla yorumladı ve ünlü Amerikalı kaligraf Tony Di Spigna'nın, üç yıldızlı meşhur bir restoranın gösterişli mönü kartında görebileceğimiz türden harfler tasarlamasını istedi. <br/><br/>Serginin görsel kimliği de Arter'in bu ilk sergisinin, bizi ardından gelecek ana yemeğe hazırlayan büyük ve bol çeşitli bir başlangıçlar seçkisi olarak görülebileceğini ima ediyor.<br/><br/> |

<br/>Arter's inaugural show, Starter presented more than 160 works by 87 artists, all belonging to the Vehbi Koç Foundation Contemporary Art Collection. The exhibition was curated by René Block, who also played a significant curatorial role in the formation of the Collection.<br/><br/>The inaugural show offered a first glimpse into the Vehbi Koç Foundation Contemporary Art Collection, the concept of which was developed three years ago, in 2007. Approaching the idea of collecting as a process that serves the future, instead of securing the past, the works in the Collection are acquired not only via auction houses, art fairs or galleries but also directly from artists' studios. VKF regards collecting as a process that takes place before art moves into the museum, i.e. before it becomes institutionalised and academically defined. The Collection thus follows in a way, Block's notion of "flowing museum" –a museum that constantly changes its forms, losing some, gaining others, but endlessly eluding completion.<br/><br/>The VKF Contemporary Art Collection focuses on contemporary art from Turkey and the neighbouring geography and as of 2010 contained around 400 works by more than 100 artists. The exhibition Starter offered an art historical perspective from the 1960s to the present, along with recent artistic practices in Turkey and abroad.<br/><br/>The designer Esen Karol has interpreted the show's title "Starter" literally and asked the renowned American calligrapher Tony Di Spigna to create letterforms reminiscent of a luxurious menu at a three-star restaurant. <br/><br/>The exhibition's visual identity also implied that this first show of Arter can be seen as a selection of a large and varied array of appetizers, designed to prepare us for the main course to follow. |
