Arter, 2 Mayıs-11 Ağustos 2013 tarihleri arasında Volkan Aslan'ın Hatırlamayı Unutma başlıklı kişisel sergisine ev sahipliği yaptı. Sanatçının Emre Baykal küratörlüğünde gerçekleştirdiği Hatırlamayı Unutma, Arter'in üçüncü katında yer aldı. Volkan Aslan, Arter'in yeni üretimleri destekleme hedefi doğrultusunda gerçekleşen bu sergi için, haftanın günlerine dair kişisel ve toplumsal reflekslere ve hislere gönderme yapan yedi yeni iş üretti.<br/><br/>Hatırlamayı Unutma'da Volkan Aslan, zamanın akışının "hatırlamak" ve "unutmak" yoluyla kesintiye uğradığı, öznel bir zaman algısıyla ilgileniyor. Haftalık takvimlerimiz bizi hep birlikte zamanda ileriye doğru iterken, Hatırlamayı Unutma'daki "günler" Aslan'ı geriye, kişisel belleğinde kalan izlenimlere doğru çekiyor.<br/><br/>Volkan Aslan, Hatırlamayı Unutma'da sergiyi bir arada tutan ana şablon olarak "hafta"yı kullanırken, haftanın yedi gününü farklı hazır nesne ve kalıplar içine yerleştirip kendi kişisel deneyim ve algılarına bağlıyor; günlerin döngüsüne kendi kişisel ritminin ve zaman algısının izlerini bırakıyor.<br/><br/>Volkan Aslan'ın Hatırlamayı Unutma başlıklı sergisi, Arter'de Mat Collishaw'un Hayalet Görüntü adlı sergisiyle eşzamanlı olarak 2 Mayıs-11 Ağustos 2013 tarihleri arasında yer aldı.<br/><br/>Sergi mekânına girer girmez karşılaştığımız Pazartesi: Işıklı Günler adlı yerleştirme, haftanın ilk ve en yoğun iş günü olan Pazartesi'yi bir tavan süslemesine dönüştürüyordu. Volkan Aslan ilk kez ilkokulunun tavanlarında gördüğü motiflerden esinle çizdiği deseni bir şablon gibi kullandı ve kamusal iç mekân aydınlatmalarında sıkça kullanılan floresanlarla sergi mekânının tavanına uyguladı.<br/><br/>Salı gününe karşılık gelen Geçen gün ömürdendir adlı siyah-beyaz fotoğraflar, bağımsız bir sanat mekânı olan 5533'ün işlerini yürütmek için Aslan'ın hemen her Salı gittiği İstanbul Manifaturacılar Çarşısı'nda rulo yapılmış bir halıyı taşıyan bir adamın dairesel hareketini yedi adımda göstererek tamamlıyor.<br/><br/>Pazartesi ve Salı'daki geometri, Çarşamba'da absürd bir simetriye dönüşüyor. – Su nerde? – İnek içti başlıklı video, Çarşamba'nın haftanın başı ve sonu arasında kurduğu simetriyi aylaklık günlerine taşımak ister gibi. Aslan, güneşli bir tatil gününde Çarşamba Ovası yakınlarında cep telefonuyla çekilen bu videoyu, üçe bölünmüş bir ekranda göstererek bir ayna etkisi yaratıyordu.<br/><br/>Perşembe'nin hazır nesnesi, dünyada en çok tanınan ikonlardan biri olan Smiley. Hoş geldiniz adlı bu performatif müdahale, güvenlik kuralları ve kurumsal prensipler gereği, ziyaret saatleri boyunca sürekli sergi mekânı içinde bulunan görevlinin de katılımıyla gerçekleşiyor. Aslan, sergi görevlisine bir Smiley maskesi verip, onu serginin gerçek bir parçası haline getiriyordu.<br/><br/>Cuma'ya karşılık gelen Yanlış Hesap, kristal bir cami avizesini sergi mekânına taşıyor. Sanki kablosu gereğinden fazla uzun tutulduğu için tavana asılırken yere düşen avizenin ampulleri yanıp sönerek, tavanda motifler çizen floresanlarla işaretleşiyor gibiydiler.<br/><br/>Hatırlamaktan çok unutmaya ayırdığımız hafta sonlarının hafif ve gevşek ritmi ise, çizgi roman kahramanları ve vitrin biblolarıyla giriyor sergiye. Volkan Aslan, hafta sonlarında ona hoşça vakit geçirten tüm çocukluk kahramanlarını büyük bir Aile Fotoğrafı çektirmek üzere, bir Cumartesi günü stüdyoda toplayıp videoya kaydediyor. İnternet üzerinden parti ve eğlence kostümleri pazarlayan bir şirkete sipariş edilen giysileri arkadaşlarına giydirerek onları –tıpkı çocukluğunun aile fotoğraflarında olduğu gibi– bir stüdyo fotoğrafçısının bakışının ve objektifinin karşısına yerleştirdi.<br/><br/>Kırılacak Eşya, boş vakitlerimizde uğraştığımız, ama sonunda sağa sola dağılıp saçılarak bütün evi ele geçiren hobilerimiz gibi, tüm sergi mekânına yayılıyordu. Aslan'ın özel bir merakla bitpazarlarından topladığı, kırık parçalarını birleştirerek melezleştirdiği biblolar, bu obsesif kır-yapıştır eylemi sonucunda biricikleşip, serginin Pazar gününe ait yadırgatıcı objelere dönüşüyorlardı. |

<br/><br/><br/>Arter hosted, between 2 May and 11 August 2013, Volkan Aslan's solo exhibition entitled Don't Forget to Remember. Curated by Emre Baykal, the exhibition was conceived as a larger installation consisting of seven new pieces alluding to personal and social reflexes and sentiments about the days of the week. Don't Forget to Remember had been realised in line with Arter's mission of supporting new productions.<br/><br/>In Don't Forget To Remember Volkan Aslan is interested in a subjective perception of time in which its linear flow is interrupted through the act of "remembering" and "forgetting". As our weekly calendars thrust us collectively forward, the "days" in Don't Forget To Remember draw Aslan back towards the past, and towards the impressions that occupy his personal memory.<br/><br/>Volkan Aslan used the "week" as the backbone of the exhibition. He connected each day to his own personal experiences and perceptions by associating them with various readymade objects and templates. In doing so, he infused the days of the week with his personal rhythm and sense of time.<br/><br/>Volkan Aslan's exhibition Don't Forget to Remember was running simultaneously with Mat Collishaw's solo exhibition Afterimage at Arter from 2 May to 11 August 2013, Sunday.<br/><br/>Monday: Illuminated Days kicks off the week the moment we enter the space. The first and busiest working day of the week takes the form of a ceiling decoration. Its repetitive pattern draws inspiration from Seljuk and Ottoman motifs, which the artist first saw on the ceilings of his primary school. Employing this pattern as a template for the work, Aslan applied it to the ceiling of the exhibition space with fluorescent lamps used in public offices.<br/><br/>In A day gone by, gone from life, which corresponds to Tuesday, consists of black-and-white photographs. Taken at the Istanbul Textile Traders' Market where Aslan visits the artist-run space 5533 almost every Tuesday, these photos represent the circular movement of a man carrying a rolled-up carpet in seven steps.<br/><br/>The geometry of Monday and Tuesday is turned into an absurd symmetry on Wednesday. The video entitled – Where's the water? – The cow drank it attempts to establish a similar symmetric balance for the idle days of the week. Shot using a mobile phone on a sunny day during a seaside holiday, the video was shown on a screen divided into three, thus creating a mirror effect.<br/><br/>The readymade object of Thursday is the Smiley emoticon, one of the most widely recognised icons in the world. Welcome is a performative intervention which involves the exhibition attendant, who, for security and institutional reasons, is present in the exhibition space during visiting hours. Aslan gave him a Smiley mask and made him an actual part of the exhibition.<br/><br/>In Miscalculation, which corresponds to Friday, Aslan brought a crystal chandelier into the exhibition space. The chandelier seemed to have been fallen onto the floor instead of hanging high above us, as if the length of its cable was miscalculated while it was being hung; and its bulbs seemed to wink to the fluorescent lamps that drew patterns on the ceiling.<br/><br/>The light and loose rhythm of weekends (the days reserved for forgetting rather than remembering) is associated with cartoon characters and statuettes. Aslan assembles these childhood heroes—the ones he spent happy weekends with—in a studio for a big Family Picture and makes a video recording of their reunion on a Saturday. Dressed up in clothes that he has ordered over the Internet from a company marketing party and festival costumes, a group of friends are asked to pose to the gaze and lens of a studio photographer—a gesture already very familiar from the family pictures of his childhood years.<br/><br/>Fragile invaded the whole exhibition space, just like our hobbies, which we can only enjoy in our spare time, but then seem to take over the entire house with their mess. Aslan collects statuettes from flea markets and hybridises them by gluing their broken parts onto one another. Sunday is illustrated in this obsessive break-and-paste act that results in unique and disturbing objects. |
