Front Door Out Back / Bill Culbert; Justin Paton

Publisher: Christchurch Art Gallery, Creative New Zealand, Massey University General note: 55. Espozisione Internationale d'Arte la Biennale di Venezia (55. Venedik Bienali) 2013.General note: This cracking little book was published to accompany Aotearoa New Zealand's presentation at the 2013 Venice Biennale, Front Door Out Back by Bill Culbert. Culbert's transformation of ordinary and often discarded objects into an extraordinary 'otherness' is uplifting, quite literally so in the case of the suspended sculptures he has fashioned for La Pietà. Despite its sometimes cheerful air of improvisation, nothing in Culbert's practice is gratuitous. Combining light and things with rare economy, he produces art that is austere, poetic and challenging in the way it invites us to revalue familiar things and focus our perceptions. With compact but sensuous design by Anna Brown of Massey's Open Lab and a gorgeous fifty-four page photographic walk-through of the Venice show by Jennifer French of Auckland Art Gallery, this is one to have and to hold rather than merely download.
