Arter'de düzenlenen sergiler sıralamasındaki yerini ismine taşıyan İkinci Sergi, koleksiyondan bağımsız oluşu ve yeni üretimlerle gerçekleştirilmiş olması nedeniyle, bu kurumsal mekânda bundan sonra izlenecek programı temsil eden ilk sergiydi. Serginin adındaki sayısal referans, bir sanat kurumunun sanatsal etkinlik programı içindeki ardışıklığı, ve sayma eylemindeki devamlılıkta olduğu gibi, kurumsal bir sürekliliği hatırlatmayı amaçlıyordu. Ayrıca sanat kurumlarının başarı ölçütünün genellikle üretilen içerikten ziyade sayısal değerlerle eşlenişine ve rakamsal değerlerin kurumlar açısından taşıdığı birincil öneme de ironik bir gönderme yapıyordu.

İkinci Sergi, Türkiye'de çağdaş sanat alanının hızlı bir ivmeyle hareketlenmesine karşın, sanat üretiminin desteklenmesine yönelik acil gereksinime henüz yeterli ve sürdürülebilir bir yanıt verilememiş olmasından hareketle yeni üretimleri teşvik etmeye odaklanıyordu. Bu yeni üretimlerin ortak bağlamını ise, 2000'li yıllarda Türkiye'nin içinden geçmekte olduğu ve sanat kurumlarında da gözlemlenen yeniden yapılanma ve dönüşüm süreçleri dikkate alınarak, merkezinde sanatın bulunduğu bir çerçeve içinden kurum ve kurumsallaşma kavramları oluşturuyordu. İkinci Sergi, "kurum" kavramına geniş bir perspektifle, sanatın içinden yeniden bakmayı öneriyordu, ve katılımcı sanatçıların ürettiği yeni işler yoluyla, sanat kurumu, sanatçı, sanat eseri ve izleyici arasındaki gerilim ve dinamikleri farklı bakış açılarından görünür kılmaya çalışıyordu.

Arter's Second Exhibition, which carried its chronological order in the exhibitions organized here to its title, was in fact the first exhibition at Arter in the sense that it was realised independently from the collection and comprised new productions, and denoted the programme that will be adhered to from that point on. The numerical reference in the title sought to evoke the sequentiality within the programme of artistic events at an art institution as well as an institutional continuity, similar to the perpetuity inherent in the act of counting.

It also ironically referenced the criterion of an art institution's success usually associated with numerical values rather than the content produced and the primary importance of numerical values for institutions.



Second Exhibition departed from the lack so far of sufficient institutional and sustainable response to the urgent requirement for support towards artistic production despite the rapid growth of contemporary art in Turkey, and focused on encouraging new productions. In consideration of the processes of restructuring and transformation that Turkey was undergoing in the 2000s, which were also observable in art institutions, the shared context of these new works consisted of the concepts of the institution and institutionalisation in a framework with art at its centre. Second Exhibition proposed to examine the concept of the "institution" from a wider perspective and from within art itself; and through the new productions by the artists, attempted to render visible the tensions and dynamics between the art institution, the artist, the work of art and the viewer from different perspectives.
